# Install Echo and sign in

> Download Echo for Mac or Windows, sign in, allow two permissions and tell Echo what kind of work you do.

Echo takes about five minutes to set up. You install the desktop app, sign in, allow the microphone and screen capture, and pick your track.

## What you need

| Device | Requirement |
| - | - |
| Mac | Apple silicon (M1 or later) with macOS 14.2 or later |
| Windows PC | 64-bit (x64) Windows |
| iPhone | iOS 16.4 or later, for in-person meetings |
| Android phone | Google Play, for in-person meetings |

Echo listens through the computer you take the call on. Nothing joins the meeting as a participant. The phone apps are for in-person meetings, not phone calls. You can also message Echo on WhatsApp and Telegram; see [Use Echo anywhere](https://docs.callecho.ai/anywhere/index.md).

> [!NOTE]
>
> On Windows, SmartScreen may say "Windows protected your PC" the first time you run the installer. Select **More info**, then **Run anyway**.

![Echo's sign-in screen with the line 'Brief yourself before every call.' and buttons to continue with Google or Microsoft, or to email a sign-in code.](https://mintcdn.com/callecho/3msX5gJvFFZ4hlDx/images/get-started/sign-in-v1.png?fit=max\&auto=format\&n=3msX5gJvFFZ4hlDx\&q=85\&s=b1c9d3271254541464069713346628a8)

1. Open Echo.
2. Select **Continue with Google**, **Continue with Microsoft** or **Email a sign-in code**.
3. Google and Microsoft finish in your browser, then send you back to Echo. With email, enter your address and select **Send code**, then enter the 6-digit code and select **Verify & sign in**, or open the link in the email.

## Allow the microphone and screen capture

On a Mac, Echo asks for two permissions before your first meeting.

![Echo's 'Two quick permissions.' screen, with Allow buttons for the microphone and for screen capture.](https://mintcdn.com/callecho/3msX5gJvFFZ4hlDx/images/get-started/permissions-v1.png?fit=max\&auto=format\&n=3msX5gJvFFZ4hlDx\&q=85\&s=004160140d378ab56f90ab60a90551fa)

* **Microphone** lets Echo transcribe your side of the call.
* **Screen capture** lets Echo record your computer's audio, which is how it hears the other people in an online meeting. macOS lists this under Screen & System Audio Recording (Screen Recording on macOS 14). It also lets you save a screenshot of a meeting when you choose to.

Select **Allow** on each card, then **Continue to Echo**. If you turned screen capture down by mistake, open **System Settings › Privacy & Security › Screen & System Audio Recording** (**Screen Recording** on macOS 14), switch Echo on, and select **I've enabled it. Re-check**.

Windows doesn't ask for these permissions, so Echo skips this screen.

## Tell Echo what you do

![Echo's About you screen asking 'What kind of work do you do?', with General, Recruiting and Travel advisor to choose from and none chosen yet.](https://mintcdn.com/callecho/3msX5gJvFFZ4hlDx/images/get-started/about-you-v1.png?fit=max\&auto=format\&n=3msX5gJvFFZ4hlDx\&q=85\&s=2287fa23b07de398e6d05879a6271392)

Echo asks **What kind of work do you do?** Pick **General**, **Recruiting** or **Travel advisor**, then select **Continue**. This is your track (Settings calls it **Work type**). It changes the suggestions Echo offers, and Recruiting adds client meeting setups and CV tools. See [Choose your track](https://docs.callecho.ai/tracks/index.md).

Earlier desktop builds may next offer Recruiting note, CV and email formats. Those screens belong to the earlier setup flow; see [Set up recruiting](https://docs.callecho.ai/tracks/recruiting/set-up.md).

## Set up with Echo

> [!NOTE]
>
> The setup below is available in desktop version 0.1.87 for Mac and Windows. An older installed version may still show the earlier format steps. See [Release status](https://docs.callecho.ai/reference/release-status.md) for changes that still await a release.

After you choose your Work type, **Set up with Echo** asks up to three questions about your meetings, then proposes Meeting Types with their own Final Notes instructions and, where useful, checklist items.

1. Answer the questions about the meetings you run.
2. Review the proposed Meeting Types. Open one to edit its Final Notes or modules, remove a type you don't need, or ask Echo to change the proposal.
3. Select **Looks good** to apply it. Reading or editing the proposal alone doesn't save it. If applying fails, retry; Echo checks what was saved before completing setup.
4. Select **Go to Home** when setup finishes.

General meeting covers meetings that don't need a special setup. Automatic suggestions preserve your own Meeting Types; an explicit request can edit or remove a custom type. You can run the interview again from **Set up with Echo** under Work type in Settings.

Calendar connection, a CV Template and a Client Email Format aren't steps in this new interview. When you first start a CV Out without a saved template, Echo asks for one then. See [Set up recruiting](https://docs.callecho.ai/tracks/recruiting/set-up.md).

## Keep Echo up to date

Echo downloads updates on its own while **Download updates automatically** is on in **Settings › About**. When a new version is required, Echo shows **Update required**: select **Download and install**, then **Relaunch now**.
