# Echo Recorder

> Pair a compatible recorder, take notes and import saved recordings in supported test builds.

> [!WARNING]
>
> Release pending — October 27, 2026. This guide describes compatible test builds, not general App Store or Google Play availability. Some recorder models remain unsupported in Android store builds. An iPhone test build has connected to a compatible recorder and captured a real sample into notes, but saved-file import and background continuity still need physical acceptance. New pairing and unpairing also require hardware acceptance. See [Release status](https://docs.callecho.ai/reference/release-status.md).

Echo Recorder lets a supported external recorder provide the audio for a Meeting. The recorder's model and your build determine which controls appear. A recorder supported on Android isn't necessarily supported on iPhone; Echo shows **Not supported yet** when the build can't use it.

## Pair a recorder

In a supported build, open **Echo Recorder** from You.

1. Turn on the recorder, hold it near your phone and allow Bluetooth when asked.
2. For **Found a new Echo Recorder**, select **Pair**. Keep it nearby while **Pairing…** is shown; a new recorder takes about 15 seconds to get ready.
3. When Echo shows **Paired**, give it a name and select **Done**.

An existing recorder may show **Connect** instead. On the first iPhone connection to a recorder already paired with your Echo account on Android, choose the saved recorder whose pairing you want to reuse. Echo doesn't try every account pairing to identify it.

Pairings confirmed by the recorder are kept with your account so another supported phone can reuse them. Removing a recorder hides it without discarding its retained pairing.

> [!WARNING]
>
> If Echo shows **Paired with another app**, follow its reset instructions only after preserving any recordings you need. That reset erases the recorder's recordings. It is different from removing a recorder from Echo.

## Take notes from the recorder

The connected recorder's page shows its status, battery and free storage. Open **Recorder settings** with the gear to choose the Meeting Type, Language and **Live transcription**, where supported.

* With Live transcription on, Echo takes notes from the recorder as it records.
* With it off, recording on the device doesn't itself produce a live note in Echo. Import the saved Recording later if that recorder and build support import.
* **Start recording** begins recording; the recording bar provides **Stop**. Starting a recording stops a file transfer already in progress.

Tell the people present that you're taking notes with an AI assistant. The recorder doesn't notify them for you. Don't rely on continued phone processing after force-quitting Echo.

## Import saved recordings

Saved-file import is release pending, with device acceptance still required for the iPhone path. On a build and recorder that support it, **On the recorder** lists the files the recorder holds, grouped by day.

* Select **Import** beside one Recording, or use the button showing the number of new recordings to import them together.
* When the import sheet appears on connection, deselect anything you don't want, then select the button showing how many recordings will be imported to Echo. **Not now** leaves them on the recorder.
* Imports run one at a time. A failed or stopped import remains available to retry; check the result in Echo before deleting the original.
* Recording takes priority over imports. Echo stops transfers while the recorder is recording.

Imports use Bluetooth. Wi-Fi transfer isn't available. Only recorders that support it offer **Import automatically** in Recorder settings; other recorders import only when you request it.

## Manage recorders and storage

Open **Recorder settings** to rename recorders, select another saved recorder or **Add a recorder**. Device settings appear only when the connected recorder supports them; Echo doesn't change those settings while it records.

Deleting a Recording or selecting **Delete all recordings** removes files from the recorder. Erasing the recorder is a separate destructive action. Check that any wanted Recording is safely in Echo before confirming either action.

Where supported, **Unpair and remove** is intended to disconnect a connected recorder and remove it from the list while leaving its recordings on the device. This operation remains subject to physical acceptance. Removing an out-of-reach recorder doesn't send an unpair command to it.
